My partner and I are saving for a tiny tiny house. Right now we are trying to figure out ways to cut expenses from our budget. Our car is a huge expense – car payment, car insurance, gas, maintenance, etc.
We purchased a Honda Fit last year. It is a great little car – good gas millage, reliable, etc. But I hate it – I don’t like driving for a variety of reasons (environmental consequences, plus crazy people on the road).
I take Amtrak to work everyday and LOVE it.
Last week, I had to call the local towing company 2 times. I needed a jump start – apparently, my battery isn’t charging because I never drive the car.
Part of me wants to sell the car and continue using Amtrak and other transportation options (yeah bike riding!).
But then – I think oi, can I get buy without a car? Especially, when I go visit friends and family that live out of town? I guess we could always rent a car when we go on trips.
I need help. What are your thoughts? Should we sell it? Or keep it?

Well, I remember when you got your little car and how excited you were, since the one you had before really needed some help. However, folks in New York and elsewhere rent cars all the time when they go out of town. And something else you may want to consider…. where are you going to put your tiny, tiny, little house and will you be accessible to trains and bike routes? I know with your current lifestyle it would be really easy to get along without your car… not so sure when you get your little house.
K – you have me there (I was so excited when I got the car). But you have a good point – when we get the tiny tiny house, it will be out of town.
So if we didn’t have a car, we would have to ride our bikes which would be a bummer (esp. in the rain).
L and I were chatting today about getting a big old truck (fueled via bio-diesel) to pull the tiny tiny house.
I hate that so many of us are tied to our cars. I guess we should move to Europe.
Great idea… moving to Europe… I get dibs on Scotland! But even there, you need some sort of auto/car transportation if you are going to live in the country… I like the idea of the truck… you could haul whatever supplies needed just once a month… that would definitely cut down on any polution that may occur… you guys are really thinking this out… I’m loving sharing in the dream! Thanks!
