After a lot of thought – L and I have decided to follow in the footsteps of a Wisconsin graduate student and divorce our car.
I would love to give our car to a charity, but we cannot afford that option. So we are going to sell it to CarMax.
Below is our Pro/Con list – check it out:
Keeping our car is a great idea because:
- Honda’s are bad ass fuel efficient cars , plus the Fit is dam cute. It is small and bright blue.
- Ease of use – I can easily get from point A to point B.
- If I don’t feel like biking to the grocery store, I can drive.
Selling my car is a fantastic idea because:
- We live in a city with readily decent public transportation! We have a lot of transportation alternatives to chose from!
- Using public transit is a good thing – every dollar I spent is a vote toward good company’s that rock (like Amtrak)
- We rarely drive the car. Usually we make a trip to visit family about once a month and drive to the grocery store. Driving to the grocery store is lame, because we could easily bike or walk.
- Saving a lot of cash! Right now we have a car payment ($400 a month), insurance, ($80 per month), plus gas and maintenance costs. We can put a portion of the money toward a travel account and save the rest for our tiny tiny house.
- With no car, I will be forced to get off my lazy ass and bike to the grocery store.
- No more traffic, congestion or lost time!
- Help the environment!
- Plus it has received the Litter Box Award.
A lot of folks have said that selling our car is a crazy idea. But there are a lot of transportation alternatives to consider:
- Walk! Believe it or not it is good for you!
- Ride your bike!
- Use public transport – buses, light rail, Amtrak, etc.
- Or you can buy a Motorboard.
- Rent a car when you need one.

Congrats!
Well girlfriend! Take the leap! You’ll do just great… I know it!
Good for you guys! It sounds like you had a lot of pro’s to divorce your car. And with all those transportation alternatives, it starts to get silly to keep it after a while.
