I am sure all of you have heard that Gov. Spitzer has decided to resign, after he was linked with a VIP call-girl service, the Emperors Club. The Associated Press has been talking about Spitzer’s “shocking” fall from power.
But are we that really surprised? We live in a capitalist culture that commodifies everything, including sex. Along with that – people from all walks of life consume pornography and purchase services from sex workers.
Maybe I am too much of a cynic for my own good but I don’t think pornography or prostitution are going to disappear anytime soon. Unfortunately, they are highly profitable industries.
So why not start talking about sex worker rights, rather than focusing on how much money Spitzer spent on his “escorts?” Or start talking about the links between prostitution and sex trafficking?
It is not surprising that media outlets fail to focus on the bigger picture, but it is disappointing.
