Self-Storage Units…

by Tammy on June 5, 2008

Americans are putting more and more stuff into self-storage purgatory. It’s now a $22 billion-per-year industry, but what does it mean for the soul?

Some startling facts in this story include:

  • Square footage of rentable storage has increased 740 percent in the past two decades;
  • A billion square feet of storage space was created between 1998 and 2005;
  • There are now 6.8 square feet of storage for every man, woman and child in America.
  • Chris Sonne, a storage expert at Cushman & Wakefield Inc., estimates there are 45,000 storage facilities today compared to zero 50 years ago.

Is all this extra stuff necessary? What is in these storage units? If you don’t use something within a 6 month period, do you need to keep it?

Image what we could do this space – like create housing for the homeless, develop community gardens and more. More people should educate themselves about voluntary simplicity – the concept has changed my life for the better.
