So L and I picked up some red worms yesterday afternoon at a local Sacramento bait shop. When we entered the store I freaked out a little — there were a number of stuffed deer heads on the walls. Not cool.
On the bright side the bait guy was friendly and helpful. He asked a typical customer service question: How can I help you? So L asked:
Do you have any live red worms?
Bait shop guy responded:
Do they come any other way?
LOL – the bait man must have thought — hmmmm these two know nothing about composting. The bait man poured them out of their tiny containers and the little worms wiggled around with glee and looked so content in their soil!
We paid for the worms and headed for the bee store. I was worried about the little ones because it was so hot outside. The bait guy stored his worms in a refrigerator, so when we arrived at home we put our little friends in the refrigerator while we prepared their home. The little ones love dark cool places.
Meanwhile – L and I did an errand for newspaper, came back home and started cutting up the paper for their bed. Finally we were ready to put the worms in their new home! Excitement filled the air.
We spread the little ones out over the paper and they were not moving!!!! Only a few here and there moved. L and I looked at each other with horror! We killed our worms!
Well maybe – we put all of the worms in their tiny home and jumped on the internet. Apparently, these little ones can survive at temperatures ranging from 42 to 80 degrees fahrenheit. If worms get cold, they don’t move as much. So we are hoping they were cold and needed to get warm.
After doing more reading L realized that we need more worms. Today we are going back to the bait shop to stock up. After our trip today we will have 10 ounces of worms (about 2/3 of a pound).
I have not checked on the worms – the directions said to leave them alone for a week before you add anything new to their environment. But, we have to check on them this afternoon after we add more tiny friends to the compost container. I will keep you posed on our progress.

Who says ya need kids to have horror stories! This is absolutely hilarious! I can just see the two of you checking in the frig, then in the newspapers, trying not to disturb anything, not letting the little critters know that you’re really watching every move they make… this is just way too much… I’m ROFL over here…..;-}
Seriously – you are awesome!!! Your comment had me ROFL!
We must get together soon for lunch. I don’t think you have seen our place, in Sac, yet.
Miss you – thanks for reading the blog! I will keep you updated on the composting project.
