Fabulous Vegetable Adventure

Peeps. Seriously. Watch out for the older women at the Sacramento Farmer’s Market. These ladies are serious about shopping for the best deals and they will do anything to get them, including throwing elbows, cursing and stepping on feet. Okay, that is a little extreme and not true. But the little old ladies will throw elbows as L found out when he was surrounded by them (some half his size) and was blocked from the produce.

Shopping for fresh food at the market is tough. So RowdyReaders, get up early if you want to avoid the crowds and the elbow action.

lettuceOther than crowd, the Sacramento Farmer’s Market was amazing. We spent about $40 and came home with:

  • 7 heads of lettuce, busting out of the plastic bag
  • Over a dozen apples
  • A basket of strawberries
  • 1 lb of tangerines
  • 2 lbs of kiwi’s
  • 2 blocks of cheese
  • 2 lb of onions
  • 1 lb of broccoli
  • 1 bag of mushrooms
  • 1 bag of dried peaches
  • 2 lbs of carrots

The cheese was about 25% ($13 per lb) of our total bill, the most expensive purchase. The best deal was the lettuce. For $2 we purchased 7 heads of lettuce. If you are looking to save money, pass on the cheese and stick to the produce. Eating local is cheap and good for your health.

I think I like young spinach best. Although sweet corn is up there in my favorites also. :)

I love kale…one of my favourites! Here’s a link to my blog entry on kale:

And those old ladies? Well I teach a group just like them in a Seniors’ Fitness Class exactly how to throw precise upper cuts and produce-protecting elbow jabs! LOL Sacramento women really rock! I hope L wasn’t overly bruised. :)
