New Year’s Goal: Eating Local

by Tammy on January 4, 2009

A portion on my New Year’s resolution included purchasing a majority of our food from local farmers. I thought this was going to be difficult because the Sacramento Co-op is fairly expensive. But we found our solution this morning! Our neighbor invited us to go the Sacramento Farmer’s Market and it was an amazing experience!

The local food is inexpensive and fabulous. For just under $40 we purchased:

  • Over 3 dozens eggs;
  • 2 blocks of fine aged cheese;
  • 2 baskets of shiitake mushroom;
  • 1 bag of kiwi’s (the bag included about 8 kiwi’s for only $1);
  • 4 onions;
  • 2 garlic bulbs;
  • 2 giant heads of red leaf lettuce;
  • About 2 pounds of apples;
  • 1 small bottle of local honey (about 8 oz.’s);
  • 1 cup of cider as a morning treat.

When we got back, L made breakfast (pictured in this post). The breakfast included sauteed onions, garlic, and shiitake mushrooms, (seasoned with salt and pepper) over eggs, with cheese and kiwi on the side. Our morning brunch cost less than $1 each!

This year, our Sunday morning’s will be spent shopping at the local farmer’s market. Yay!

If eating healthy / local has become part of your life, tell me about your experience.
