Our tiny wheat mill has served us well during the last year. I am slowly growing to love the mill, which is surprising. Initially, I didn’t want to purchase the item.
You might be asking yourself a few questions: What is a wheat mill and why in the world would you want a wheat mill?
Below are reasons why we grind our own flour and some tips that might be helpful for you to implement in your own life.
1. Improving health & diet.
Eating whole foods is an important part of our diet and by grinding our own flour we know what goes into our bread, cookies and other flour based treats.
Some would argue that grinding your own wheat is too much work and isn’t simple. That is true to some degree, but the benefits outweigh the work. Benefits, like saving money, improving our health and diet can’t be bought at the store.
2. Flavor.
Our flour based creations taste much better compared to mass-produced food found in grocery stores.
3. Economics.
We are still eating on grain prices from the summer of 2007. Why does that matter? Wheat berries have doubled in price in the last year! Food prices have declined somewhat, but it is nice to have a full pantry. Buying in bulk is a great money saving strategy and foods like wheat berries hold their nutrients for 10-20 years. But if you want them to last, they have to be sealed in an air tight container and stored in a cool dark area.
4. Other options?
Obviously, this isn’t a feasible option for everyone. If you can’t grind your own wheat, buy whole grain flour (it should be an off white brownish color) or purchase whole grain breads, cookies, and other foods. But remember to read the ingredients. If you don’t recognize an ingredient or can’t pronounce the name, it probably isn’t a real whole food or real food for that matter.

And I can guarantee that the chocolate chip cookies made from Rowdy’s own mill are MOST EXCELLENT! The real *she says munching the last crumb* problem is that they don’t last very long! Thanks bunches for the “Take Home” T&L
Glad you liked the treats Debby! It was so good to see you this weekend. Thank you for dropping off our lamp at the thrift store. At least we didn’t have to try and drag it to the store on our bike. Teehee.
Let’s plan another lunch soon! We should invite C too! Big hugs…
RK says “benefits outweigh the work”. This is true especially when your partner does all of the wheat grain grinding.
I’m not complaining though, my twig arms need some exertion from time to time

You can also call wheat berries, wheat grains, for anyone who is confused about what the heck wheat berries are.
