Clayton i-house goes on sale

by Tammy on May 6, 2009

The i-house isn’t super tiny, but it’s still a great alternative if you are looking for something small, somewhat mobile and reasonably priced.

Everyone’s going green these days, and one of the best options is to live in a green home. Clayton Homes, the largest manufacturer of modular homes in the U.S., has now launched the new, eco-friendly Clayton “i-house” that is being claimed to be at least 30 percent more energy efficient than a traditional home. The Energy Star-rated i-house enjoys a contemporary design and features solar panels, a rainwater harvesting system, high-end “low e” windows, a tankless water heater, low-flow faucets, renewable bamboo flooring and a range of other energy-saving features. The i-house is available in two packages – the $74,900, 723-square-foot i-house I, and the $93,300, 1,023-square-foot i-house II. Clayton Homes cites that the i-house’s energy costs are less than $70 a month, but that figure drops to less than $1 a day with the optional solar panel system. We have seen some really expensive green homes in the past, but with its low, reasonable price, the Clayton i-house is sure to attract more and more customers.

what a cool design. tammy you are such an inspiration! been going thru boxes at my parents’ house and photographing a lot of old stuff to give it away… and helping my parents get rid of a lot of junk too!! though with their VERY non-tiny house they aren’t quite so interested in paring down. my question is… say i wanted to still live in an urban area… where do you PUT something like this??

You are sweet – I’m glad you’re helping your folks pair down. :) The question of where to put an i-house is a good one. You might be able to squeeze something like it on an urban plot, but it would depend on the city regulations. I’ve seen a number of lots in Sacramento that would be perfect for an iHouse or a Tumbleweed. The challenge is getting around regulations. I keep thinking that the Small House Movement needs an army of local lobbyists. :)

@Dracenea – It is kind of expensive. But then again, the average home price is around $300,000. I guess it depends on how much money a person is willing to spend. The iHouse design is awesome, but I still prefer the Tumbleweed and Tortoiseshell models. :)

That’s a very cool looking house! I like that raised deck- might have to incorporate something like that into my shipping container home design.

Thanks for spreading the word on that company; I hadn’t heard of them.
