Current-Sea Change looks like an awesome new documentary. One of my favorite authors, Vicki Robin, was interviewed for the film.
So RowdyReaders how do you define money? Is your relationship with money good, bad or indifferent?

Looks like a great movie.
I’m not sure I have a good definition of money; I just know that in our society the way we choose to think of it will imprison or free us. I also know that once we’ve chosen imprisonment it’s very very hard to detach from the beast.
For example:
- Why do we think a 30-year mortgage for a six figure house is normal and acceptable? Isn’t a mortgage really just a fancy lease?
- Why do we use credit cards to buy things we want and don’t need? More stuff just requires more time and space to care for and store.
- Why do we buy new cars with five years worth of monthly payments when there are so many great inexpensive used cars on the road. Do we really feel better in nice cars?
Actually if you look at what has happened in the economy the last couple years it seems we’ve all figured out that all of this is nuts, or more likely, people are just stalled due to reduced cash-flow and credit availability.
I just read an economic report showing that Treasury Bonds are up and are probably a foreshadowing of an economic recovery. This is great news for me because I’m done with the imprisonment and working hard to correct my past personal financial mistakes and choosing freedom over debt prisons and perceived wealth.
No matter when we think of money the one simple truth that is worth noticing is that no matter how much you make spend far less and put what you can save into things that are real and tangible. If you do this then you can live sustainably and happily with or without a lot money.
IMHO,
Michael
Nice video, I’m looking forward for the doc. Previously I haven’t put much thought on money and considered it as the necessary evil to get by in life. Nowadays I have a new relationship with the figures on my accounts. They are only figures. I only need enough of them to get by. I do not need to accumulate the figure by working all the time. Enough is enough.
@sampsa and @Michael – I completely agree. So many people are tied to accumulating more stuff and money. I think American’s are starting to reach the “enough” point and it’s a good place to be. Once folks get there they start seeing a life beyond the rat race and start working on pursuing their dreams.
Hey have you seen this video/book? It fits this topic perfectly.
