Hello,
I’ve enjoyed reading rowdykittens, thank you for taking the time to have it.
My husband and I want to escape the rat race and live the simple life but the one thing that is stopping us is health insurance. What have you found others are doing for affordable health insurance if they can’t get it through their employer? I realize we’ll get healthier as we slow our life down but you never know when a hospital stay may be needed.
Thanks for any ideas you can give us,
Lori
Hi Lori,
Health insurance is a tough topic in the USA, especially if you have a preexisting condition. We understand your reticence. It took us an extra amount of time to save up enough to cover this cost before we “escaped”. To navigate the crazy world of insurance we found a healthcare broker through a trusted friend and got his advice on our needs based on our lifestyle. It was terrific to get solid insight and expert advice into what we needed and what we didn’t need. After the consultation we started the new insurance plan and factored in the cost into our budgets and savings for the period we knew that business would be weak. Basically we opted to pay higher deductibles for greater coverage (preventing bankruptcy from an unforeseen health crisis). We don’t mind paying for routine check-ups and the Doc’s usually give a 20-30% discount when you pay in cash up front.
Also its good to establish a regular relationship with a family doctor. That way when a trip to the hospital is needed you can make an appointment and avoid costly ER visits.
Necessary Caveat: The ideas here of course are just from our story and experience and we are not licensed professionals so take it for what its worth.
We are big proponents of universal care. I don’t think anyone should have to suffer and die due to a preventable “disease” of poverty. Hope this helps! Cheers, Logan.
