These photographs are incredible! Check out 100 Abandoned Houses and tell me what you think of this amazing project…

A note regarding the New York Times article about the 100 Abandoned Houses project: The last few sentences have made it sound, to some, as if I am angry that no one in Detroit has purchased a print, when in reality, the last sentence is supposed to refer to the reason I felt a Detroiter may not want to buy a photo of an abandoned house. If you live among abandoned houses, they are most likely not fascinating, but maddening and/or depressing.

The abandoned houses project began innocently enough roughly ten years ago. I actually began photographing abandonment in Detroit in the mid 90’s as a creative outlet, and as a way of satisfying my curiosity with the state of my home town. I had always found it to be amazing, depressing, and perplexing that a once great city could find itself in such great distress, all the while surrounded by such affluence.

Brush Park, on the outskirts of Detroit’s entertainment district was always an area of interest to me. For as long as I can remember the area, housing large houses and mansions, sat largely abandoned just a stones throw away from the Fox Theater, and not far from Wayne State University, the Masonic Theater, and even the central business district. How could an area that was obviously once a wealthy enclave in the city become an example of the downfall of American cities? Continue reading by clicking here.

Don’t forget…

I’ll be on vacation until July 24th. It’s my first 2 week vacation in years. Yay!

I won’t be posting a lot of in-depth articles, but I will be sharing useful posts that I’ve stumbled across on the internet. I might be a tad slow when responding to comments, so be patient. :)

Expect a lot of fun articles from me once I get back from vacation. Have a great few weeks peeps!

This is really sad, but as a mixed-race child of parents who were born and raised in the city, then moving out in the 70’s, the reason Detroit is so rundown is because of the hostility between the races. My (hispanic/white-looking) mother was constantly threatened and told on more than one occasion to, “pack up and leave our (black) city.” My father is African American, but even he got fed up with the anger that is pervasive in the city. All their friends and family who stayed have gotten angrier and more militant/racist over the years against everyone who isn’t black like they are. My parents tell me that it is because the minorities actively pushed everyone out, then got angry when all the money and safety when with them, so now they feel both entitled to living “the good life” while living on the government dime and acting out against all the perceived “enemies” that have wronged them, mostly whites and arabs. My personal experience has been that I can spot a native Detroiter a mile away by their anger and their sense of entitlement. I truly wish things would get better, but they won’t until people stop being so angry.
