Car Lust: VW Vans

by Tammy on August 19, 2009

I love my biking lifestyle and hope to stay carfree forever. But, you never know what the future holds. I’ve seen a few tweets fly by about VW Van’s lately and I absolutely love them. If I ever buy a car again, a VW Van will be my number 1 choice.

What is your fantasy car?

Tammy,

I too love the VW Vans. A and I have long talked about getting one. But I think our truest dream car is a 1977 High Sierra truck. You know, super boxy, super retro. I’m thinking turquoise. I’ve wanted one for years, and we’d convert it to hydrogen or biodiesel if we get one.

Ohhh the High Sierra trucks are so much fun. If we ever buy a car again, we will go with the hydrogen or biodiesel option.

It’s so funny because I don’t like cars, but for some reason I just love the VW Vans. They are cute. :)

Talk about irony…

In my less-green days, I would have said a Buick Grand National. Vroom vroom.
Now I’d love to have a small used truck to tool around in, but we’re going to make our current cars last as long as possible!

@Katie – I think Logan’s grandparents have a Buick. It’s a super nice car and goes fast up the hills (lots of vroom). But way too expensive. Getting by with your current car is a great option. :)

I had a 72 VW Van a long time ago. Hate that I parted with it. Travelled all over the SW in it. So love them!

My parents got one of those brand new from his dad when they got married. That was about 6 months before I was born, so I was practically raised in that thing. I drove a (Ford) van in high school for a while, and had a few VW Bugs I always had as baja bugs. Those VWs are full of character and relatively easy to fix. Of course with that ease being because they are such old technology comes the downside of age. Wear and finding parts becomes more problematic.

If we ever get another vehicle, it’ll be a van or something similar. If I can’t carry bicycles, kayaks, a motorcycle and allow me to live in it for at least long weekends, it is just a car. Cars are a headache I don’t really want or need :-)

@James – I won’t be getting a car anytime soon. Especially, since we live in an urban area. Renting is the best option for us. I’d love to rent a VW Van for a weekend. That would be great fun and less responsibility. I don’t want to deal with wear and tear of parts as a car owner. That’s part of the reason we sold our little car last year. :)

Even if we move to a rural area in the future, I’d love to try and get by without a car or figure out how to arrange some type of car share program. It’s much more cost effective. :)

@Leslie – Ohhh how fun. Do you have any travel photos to share with your little van?
