Dumpster Dipping: rescue, recover and reuse

by Tammy on October 28, 2009

One of my lovely readers altered me to Dumpster Dipping! If you’re considering trying out dumpster dipping, check out this step-by-step guide…

Dumpster Dipping (please avoid dangerous diving) is an enjoyable activity involving a pleasant bike ride, a hunt, the thrill of discovery, the mystery of recent archeology, forensic storytelling, good Karma recycling, and a form of shopping with green environmental impact.

It helps me get in touch with my early human hunter gathering roots. It is similar to gold panning, hunting, geo-caching, shopping, gambling and other hunt and find challenges where there are a variety of possible outcomes. It is also possible to undo your entire carbon footprint through the recycling of other people’s former stuff.

My husband used to work at a major landfill. He’s a mechanic so hardly ever got in on the action, but you wouldn’t believe what some companies would throw away. Most of the time, big corporations would send guards to stand and make sure all of the stuff was crushed or buried.
I’ve gotten great stuff from dumpsters – plants, filing cabinets. The women at the senior center where my mom used to live went Dumpster Diving each Friday morning (trash day).

@Kerri and Joe – It’s amazing what kind of items people throw away and it’s such a shame. So it’s always good to hear dumpster diving stories. At least all this good stuff isn’t going into the landfill.

Thanks for reading!

I recently read an article about Freegans: people who get all of their food from dumpster diving. These people were eating GOOD! It said that almost 1/4 of all trash in the US is food. This is at the same time that people in this country (not to mention poorer countries) go to bed hungry every night. Disturbing to say the least.

@Kevin – yes it’s really disturbing. I did a post about Freegans sometime last year and I was amazed by their strategies! It’s disturbing that so much food gets thrown out; especially when it’s still edible and could be used to feed the hungry.
