Hey, thanks for the link, I’m interested to peek some more at your site, it looks quite interesting. My wife and I have been in a similar process of simplifying life, and I’m always interested to hear and see what others are doing.
I feel extremely fortunate that we live in Portland, as I think much of what we’ve done to simplify things has been easy and for the large part socially normal even, compared to much of the rest of the U.S. Some of the things we do might surprise some people, but they don’t generally think we’re crazy
Much of it started with food – starting with the basic ingredients and making our own – then moving into more advanced stuff like bread and sauerkraut and simple cheeses (which really is simple, and just takes some time) and soon hopefully sausages and more pickles and fermentations (kimchee perhaps).
Then came bicycles
Then smaller apartment, oil lamps and candles, fewer and fewer electronic devices (doing things like shaving by hand is more enjoyable anyway), and on and on.
It’s an interesting journey, finding an appropriate balance in life. I like the process a lot. Cheers!
Thanks for the mention! I’m happy to have added your fabulous blog to my RSS feed. It is always lovely to run across like-minded people.
@Frugal Kiwi – of course! Thanks for adding me to your feed.
@Dave – for sure! I dig your blog.
I just moved up to Portland. We should have coffee sometime and talk about simple living. Your story is so interesting. I’d love to hear more!
Glad you like the blog! I’m sure we could do coffee sometime, or maybe brunch on a weekend or something. What part of town are you in? My wife and I have been frequenting the Bakery Bar on about NE 28th and Glisan lately for brunch on weekends
@Dave – Ohhh I like the idea of a brunch! That sound so fun. I’m free this weekend and next. So let me know what works best for ya. My email address is – tammy@rowdykittens.com
Thanks for the link to Leo’s new project on disconnection. I totally would have missed that! It’s fantastic reading from him, as usual.
I read your article on running shoes the other day with pure joy. I was reminiscing about my childhood and being barefoot at the Jersey shore. Today unfortunately is a very different story. Our skin is considered our largest organ and contains pores that are direct links to our other organs and circulatory system. The pores on the soles of our feet are the largest pores on our person. Therefore when we walk/run outside ( or inside on carpet etc ) we are absorbing everything that has been there before us. Just imagine what is in the dirt, pesticides, chemicals, human waste……… For this reason alone, I always wear some type of shoe or foot covering. Maybe someone can invent a better running shoe?
@Kathleen – I didn’t write the article. It was a guest post by Jessica.
She might have more information about different types of running shoes. Many of the comments mentioned Vibram shoes. Have you tried those?
Thanks for reading the blog and have a great week!
